The official Marshmallow update for Samsung Nexus 10 is not going to happen because Google has dropped support for the tablet, but thankfully, as was the case with Nexus 4 Marshmallow update (one more ROM) and Nexus 7 Marshmallow update, there is AOSP code based custom ROM now available for Nexus 10 too.

Yes Nexus 10 users, within a week of Nexus 5, 6, 9 and 7 (2013) receiving the official Marshmallow update, you get to run Android 6.0 running on your devices too. That’s cool, right?

The custom ROM that will update your Nexus 10 to Marshmallow comes from Dmitry Grinberg, who brought us the Nexus 4 ROM before anyone else — you owe him a thank if you like his work.

The ROM is quite good, and even though there are chances it’s rough at some edges, you are still good to go for it as your daily driver. And let’s not forget it’s Android 6.0 when it wasn’t supposed to be, at least officially.

Let’s have a look at how to install the Nexus 10 Marshmallow update using AOSP custom ROM.

  • Marshmallow custom ROM — Link Download Mirror File: MantaM_twrp-flashable.zip (184.95 MB)
  • Google Apps (Gapps) — Link

As said above, this is the work of Dmitry Grinberg, and not our own work, so big thanks to him.

Supported devices

  • Samsung Nexus 10, model no. GT-P8110 (codename manta)
  • Don’t try this on any other device than the one having model no. specified above.

Use the Droid Info app, to determine the codename of your Nexus 10. If it is exactly the one specified above, then it should be compatible with the 6.0 custom ROM we have here.

Warning!

Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page. You only are responsible for your device. We won’t be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

Backup!

How to Install

Required: You will need to have TWRP recovery installed on your device to be able to install Marshmallow custom ROM and Google Apps (Gapps). Check out our page on Nexus 10 TWRP recovery for flashing Gapps.

Step 1.Download the Marshmallow ROM and gapps file from above.

Step 2. Connect your device to PC and transfer the ROM and gapps file to it. Disconnect the device then. Remember the location of the files.

Step 3. Boot your Nexus 10 into recovery mode. If you are rooted, you can use Quick Boot app from play store. To manually boot into recovery mode, do this:

  • Power off your device and wait for 5-10 seconds until the device is fully switched off.
  • Press and hold Volume Down + Power button together and release them as soon as you see the bootloader screen.
  • Press Volume Down button twice and then press Power button to boot into recovery mode.

You will enter recovery mode soon, and should see TWRP recovery. If you see 3e recovery, then you need to install TWRP recovery for this.

Step 4. [Optional] Once in TWRP, create a backup of your device. Tap on Backup, and then select all the partitions for back. Now do the swipe action at bottom to start creating a backup for emergency cases. This backup is really a lifesaver!

Step 5. Do a Factory Reset. On TWRP’s main screen, tap on Wipe, then advanced wipe, and now make sure you have selected these partitions: dalvik cache, data, system and cache. Then do the Swipe action at bottom to confirm it.

Step 6.UnmountSystem now. Use the TWRP’s mount menu, and then deselect the System from there, so that it’s not mounted while we flash the ROM.

Step 7. Now, install the ROM file. On TWRP’s homescreen, tap on Install, and then locate the ROM file and tap on it. Then do the Swipe action at bottom to begin flashing the update.

Step 8. Tap on Home button to go back. Now, install the Gapps the same way you installed Marshmallow ROM on your Nexus 10.

Step 9. When it’s done, tap on Reboot system button to restart the device.

That’s it.

A few days after the Nexus 4 Toolkit was released, now there’s everything possible for the Nexus 10 tablet with the toolkit being released by the XDA developers. There are a lot of developer options and changes that can be done to the Nexus 10 tablet, using the toolkit. From installing drivers to rooting, backing up and restoring the device, the single toolkit does most of the job for the user who wanted to get things done in an easy way.

The GOOGLE NEXUS 10 TOOLKIT V1.3.0 does the following jobs:

  • Installation of adb/fastboot drivers to your PC with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista or XP on 32bit/64bit
  • Backing up and restoring a single package or the entire load of apps, user data and the Internal storage
  • Backing up of the /data/media (virtual SD Card) section for the Full Safe backup of the data
  • Unlock/Re-Lock the Bootloader
  • Root Stock Jelly Bean builds (upto 4.2.0 JOP40C)
  • 1-Click For All to Unlock the Bootloader, Root, Rename the Restore File and Flash Custom Recovery
  • Pull /data and /system folders, compress to a .tar file and save to your PC
  • Flash Custom Recovery or Google Stock Image to phone
  • Rename the Recovery Restore File present on some Stock ROMS
  • Use adb sideload in Custom Recovery to root/unroot zip files very easily
  • Boot into CWM Touch Recovery without Flashing it
  • Boot or Flash .img Files directly from your PC
  • Pull Files from your phone to your PC
  • Dump selected LogCat buffers to your PC
  • Install a single apk or multiple apk’s to your phone
  • Push Files from your PC to your phone
  • Dump BugReport to your PC
  • Set Files Permissions on your phone
  • Open new Command Prompt for manual input
  • Reboot Phone to Fastboot Mode or Android from fastboot mode
  • Reboot Phone to Fastboot Mode, Recovery, Android or Download Mode from adb mode

NANDROID Backup –
The Nexus 10 Toolkit would perform a FULL NANDROID Backup of your system (Boot, Cache, Data, Recovery and System) via adb and save in Custom Recovery format on your PC, and this backup can be later Restored via CWM Recovery

For those who are wondering whether it is possible to root the Nexus 10 using this toolkit without unlocking the bootloader, it isn’t possible because you would need to have the bootloader unlocked as the booting and flashing of images can be done only when the unlock is done. You can again lock the bootloader after rooting the device.

Rarely there are users who might not be able to install the drivers of the Nexus 10 in their Windows 8 OS, and that’s an issue with the Driver Signature Enforcement. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to Settings by moving your mouse to the extreme right corner where the pop-out bar would appear, and then click on the wrench icon
  • Click on “More Settings” and then “General”
  • Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’.
  • Click ‘Troubleshoot’.
  • Click ‘Advanced Options’
  • Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’
  • Click Restart.
  • After the computer restarts you would need to click on “Disable Driver Signature Enforcement” from the list, and then the driver installation would happen without a problem.
